Broad is the road that leads to death,
And thousands walk together there;
But wisdom shows a narrow path,
With here and there a traveler.
"Deny thy self and take thy cross,"
Is the redeemer's great command;
Nature must count her gold but dross,
If she would gain this heav'nly land.
The fearful soul that tires and faints,
and walks the ways of God no more;
Is but esteemed almost a saint,
And makes his own destruction sure.
Lord, let not all my hopes be vain,
Create my heart entir'ly new;
Which hypocrites could ne'er attain,
Which false apostates never knew.
ALTERNATE LYRICS:
TIME AND ETERNITY
How vain is all beneath the skies!
How transient ev'ry earthly bliss!
How slender all the fondest ties
That bind us to a world like this!
The evening cloud, the morning dew,
The with'ring grass, the fading flow'r,
Of earthly hope are emblems true,
The glory of a passing hour!
But tho' earth's fairest blossoms die,
And all beneath the skies is vain,
There is a brighter world on high,
Beyond the reach of care and pain.
Then let the hope of joys come
Dispel our cares, and chase our fears;
If God be ours, we're trav'ling home,
Tho' passing thro' a vail of tears.
HE DIES, THE FRIEND OF SINNERS DIES
He dies! the Friend of Sinners dies!
Lo! Salem's daughters weep around;
A solemn darkness veils the skies;
A sudden trembling shakes the ground.
Ye saints approach!
the anguish view of Him Who groans beneath your load;
He gives His precious life for you,
For you He shed His precious blood.
Here's love and grief beyond degree.
The Lord of Glory dies for men!
But lo! what sudden joys we see!
Jesus, the dead, revives again!
The rising God forsakes the tomb;
Up to His Father's courts He hies;
Angelic legions guard Him home,
And shout Him welcome to the skies.
Break off your tears, ye saints,
and tell How high your great Deliverer reigns;
Sing how He spoiled the hosts of hell,
And lead the tyrant Death in chains!
Say, "Live forever wonderous King!
Born to redeem, and strong to save!"
Then ask, "O Death, where is thy sting?
Where is thy victory, O grave?"
BOWED DOWN BENEATH A WEIGHT OF WOE
Bowed down beneath a weight of woe,
Where olives in the garden grow,
Thou was in agony laid low,
For me, O Lamb of God, for me!
And yonder in the judgment hall
Whose dreadful scourgings still appall,
In patients Thou didst bear them all,
For me, O Lamb of God, for me!
While darkness overspread the sky,
To Calv'ry's cross, uplifted high,
Thou camest willingly to die,
For me, O Lamb of God, for me!
Sing Hallelujah! Wondrous wise,
While rosy dawn illumed the skies,
Triumphantly Thou didst arise,
For me, O Lamb of God, for me!
WINDHAM (ALT)
Show pity, Lord, O Lord forgive;
Let a repenting rebel live;
Are not Thy mercies large and free?
May not a sinner trust in Thee?
My crimes, tho' great, do not surpass
The pow'r and glory of Thy grace;
Great God, Thy nature hath no bound,
So let Thy pardoning love be found.
O, wash my soul from ev'ry sin,
And make my guilty conscience clean;
Here on my heart the burden lies,
And past offences pain mine eyes.
My lips with shame, sins confess,
Against Thy law, against Thy grace;
Lord, should Thy judgment prove severe,
I am condemned, but thou art clear.
Yet same a trembling sinner, Lord,
Whose hope, still hov'ring around Thy word,
Would light some sweet promise there,
Some sure support against despair.
JUSTIFICATION
Our nature fell in Adam's fall,
One common sin infects us all,
From sire to son the bane descends,
And over all the curse impends.
Corruption creeps through all our powers,
And withers all life's heavenly flowers;
In guilt we draw our earliest breath,
And reap its fruits of woe and death.
From hearts depraved, to evil prone,
Flow thought and deeds of sin alone;
God's image lost, the darkened soul
Nor seeks nor finds its heavenly goal.
But Christ, the second Adam, came
To bear our sin and woe and shame,
To be our life, and by His grace
To new-create our fallen race.
Thanks, Savior! that new life is ours,
That grace has changes our broken powers;
O still that saving grace extend
To make us steadfast to the end.
